RIP WBCN

I just heard the other day that "The Rock of Boston WBCN" is shutting down on standard radio. I was a huge fan of the station and didn't even realize it was heading in this direction. So it turns out that WEEI or one of the sports stations is making a foray into FM radio and took 98.5. Mix 98.5 will now be moving to 104.1, replacing WBCN. One of my favorite elements of the show, Toucher and Rich, will still be airing on the new sports station 98.5. WBCN goes off the air in mid August. For those of you with an HD radio, WBCN will still be aired but only in HD unavailable to regular radio listeners. If you want to read more here's the story from the horse's mouth:

WBCN switch.

  1. I know...it's a terrible conclusion for the rock of Boston. I think sports stations should stay away from FM radio. FM radio should be all about the music. That's how I would have it anyway.

  2. I don't have a connection to this particular station, but I've had enough stations that I was, in fact, heavily invested in go KABOOM over the years--it's a sickening feeling. Sorry to hear about it!

Remember that you're doing just one blog post a day, right?

  3. I know I only get credit for one but can I still do more just for the fun of it?

  4. Isn't it sad? The 'Sports Hub' on 98.5 will be Boston's other choice now besides the ancient WEEI. I think it will be a welcome change to most, but I hope that Toucher and Rich's format doesn't change! I've been listening to them regularly for about 2 years now, and I've noticed some small changes already. On Friday, they had a much longer than usual sports section, which is expected I guess given their new 'home' on the dial. I'm a little upset about the other shows though, I thought Hardy and Adam12's shows were decent too. I wrote an article about this last week, and one reader thought I should try satellite radio. I may have to give it a try!

  5. Yes it does suck that WBCN is going under. Toucher and Rich as well as the other shows on there are pretty cool, and it's going to be weird to not have bcn around anymore after four decades of quality music, entertainment and fun.

For the big fans of the station it will still be available on wbcn.com as well as 98.5 HD 2 if you have an HD Radio receiver...

  6. To answer your question above, you can write as much as you want! I am just trying to encourage (with points) spreading out the blogging.... So while you have 7 posts here the last two weeks, I can only give points for 5 (2x you wrote two in a day). Hopefully you have comments sprinkled throughout to add up to 100 pts total!

  8. Though, I do not listen to AM radio, I do think it is sad how this station is going off air. I wonder what caused this to happen...perhaps ratings? But still, I have noticed that people do not listen to the radio nearly as often as they used to. Instead, I feel that a lot of my friends and people I know plug in their Ipods to a connection in the car or throw in a CD. While this is all well and good, clearly it is not helping the stations in retrieving new listeners.
