I just read an article about a band called Advance Patrol that put up it's newest album on a file sharing website called ThePirateBay. This website has come under fire for hosting peer to peer file sharing servers where people can freely download music and television. Record labels used Advance Patrol's previous album as a direct example of file sharing without asking if they could use the band in their case. This retaliation has been hailed by many because the band is sticking up for its fans. The band said that as long as people are listening to their album, they're happy. The music industry is already heading downhill and mounting these kinds of suits is not going to help them in the slightest. It's just nice to see the bands siding with the real people who help them make a passion into a career.
Here's the original article.

I agree that it's so refreshing to see a band that is catching on to the new wave of radio and music culture. Online music file sharing is too big to really stop without spending and outrageous amount of money. The music business itself is very hesitant to let go of traditional CD's and FM radio play. Because of this, I feel like they really are missing out on opportunities to expand themselves through iTunes and internet downloads. There are endless possibilities out there, and this is going to continue to grow in popularity whether artists and studios like it or not! So, good for Advance Patrol! They are ahead of the game as far as I can tell.
ReplyDeleteI like what they are doing and think it is a good choice. But personally I'm disappointed because I miss the days where people would go out to the stores to buy a new cd the week it came out. I mean cds are only $10-15 and as much money as artists are making, they still deserve to get fair sales. I know Itunes and downloading is taking over, but I wish it wasn't and I'll still be purchasing my favorite artists cd at a local store until they do away with it.
ReplyDeleteHere's a nudge to check out the new book from Chris Anderson, called FREE. You can link to his blog from my blog, and can access a stream of his digital book there....for free. I talked about his earlier book THE LONG TAIL this week on the d/board.... the bib info for that is in the back of our BLOGGING book...
ReplyDeleteMy side question is: are Advanced Patrol any good?
It's not really my type of music. They're a Latin Hip Hop group.
ReplyDeleteThis is like when Radiohead decided to let you decide how much their music was worth! Except Radiohead was smarter because they left the option open to still get some money out of the deal.
ReplyDeleteI am a huge Radiohead fan and loved their idea with the last album. It's just showing that the music industry is slowly losing power and control over what we hear. It's a nice feeling.
ReplyDeleteI think the key issue here is file sharing is illegal, its stealing and its not right. Did i do it when I was younger, Yes, but I havent in a long time because I don't think its right. I work in the movie theatre and I know first hand that piracy of any copyrighted material is wrong. However, if the artist is ok with it thats fine, thats their choice. But as far as people stealing I can't say its harmless because its not, you may be stealing from the music industry, which is rolling in cash, but its still wrong. If I ever catch anyone recording a movie at my theatre, I'll gladly have them arrested because its wrong, its stealing simple as that
ReplyDeleteBe that as it may, the fact of the matter is that this record company used this band's music as a direct link to a file sharing suit without permission. That too, Michael, is wrong.
